What course do I follow?

 

Religious Studies OCR SYLLABUS B  (Philosophy and Ethics) Full Course (1931)

 

 

 

What will I study?

 

This course offers an opportunity to develop the themes studied in the general Religious Studies course to gain a GCSE qualification. 

8 topics are studied:-

bullet Human Relationships e.g. issues related to the family, marriage, divorce, sexual  relationships and contraception.
bullet Poverty and wealth e.g. explaining the causes of poverty, giving to charity, attitudes towards money, work and occupations.
bullet Medical Ethics e.g. attitude towards fertility treatment, abortion, euthanasia, using animals in medical research.
bullet Equality e.g. different views about equality, prejudice, forgiveness and

reconciliation.

bullet The Nature of God e.g. why do some people believe in God?  Do miracles really happen?
bullet Good and evil  e.g. exploring beliefs and responses to the problem of evil and suffering, considering moral codes.
bullet Religion and Science e.g. ideas about creation and evolution, the purpose of life, the relationship between people and the planet, environmental issues.
bullet Death and the Afterlife, investigating ideas of “body and soul”, “heaven and hell”, beliefs about life after death.

 

In each topic pupils consider a range of views including their own viewpoint and

Christian beliefs, values and tradition.

 

 

 

Details of Examination

 

There is no coursework.

Pupils following this full course sit 2 exam papers (8 questions).

 

 

 

Additional Information

 

A GCSE in Religious Studies will enable you to gain a qualification in a subject

you have been studying for most of your school life.  This course will help you

to understand a range of views on topical issues and give you the opportunity

to develop and express your own viewpoint.  Religious Studies is not about

being religious!   It’s about exploring difficult and important questions in life,

understanding why people respond in different ways and expressing your own

informed and reflective opinions.

 

Many employers value people with a fair and open minded approach.  This

course can help you develop skills which will support you in life as well as in a

range of careers such as journalism, health and social services, the police,

teaching, etc.
